Internet marketing tips for your small business.

The Biggest SEO Mistake I see

Here’s a question I get asked all the time. What’s the biggest mistake you see companies make when investing in SEO? Far and away, I’ll tell you that it’s starting anything without having a clearly defined keyword list of the terms that you want to rank for that are going to bring you new business. Keywords are what customers type into Google that you want to get found for because it’s going to result in a sale for you or a lead. For whatever reason, so many companies rush into SEO and the tell their team to get going, or they hire an outside SEO firm. They put no thought into the terms that they want to bring forth.

With anything, you have to begin with the end in mind. You have to define success before you get started. Knowing exactly which keywords you should rank for that are going to bring you business is always the first step in an SEO campaign. Any good SEO rep is going to be able to help you do that research and understand what you want to bring forth.

You may hear a lot about the death of keyboards these days. What they mean by that is that you can no longer stuff the same keyword into a webpage four or five or ten times just in the hopes of ranking for that keyword. Google is smarter than ever and you still need quality and compelling content to actually rank. You still need to know what terms you’re hoping that webpage will bring forth. Avoid the most common mistake in SEO and don’t do anything until you know exactly what you want to rank for.
